Updates in Sleep and Pain

Program Co-Chairs: Mariona Mulet and Maria Hernandez

Course Description:

Sleep medicine is a developing field of study that has gained a lot of traction in the last decade. Articles about the importance of sleep and the negative consequences of sleep disturbances are frequent nowadays in local and national newspapers. Books and other educational resources on this topic, such as podcasts and social media content, are also available for the general public. Patients are aware of the link between sleep and health and are proactively seeking care for their sleep problems. The diagnosis of sleep disorders such as insomnia, narcolepsy, and sleep apnea has increased appreciably in recent years. Because of the well-known interactions between sleep and pain, and specifically between sleep and orofacial pain, the American Academy of Orofacial Pain has been dedicated to the education of its members on this topic. Orofacial Pain specialists are required to develop an in-depth understanding of the most common sleep disorders, the detrimental effects of poor sleep and pain interactions, so that a comprehensive and often multidisciplinary management approach can be provided to the patient.

The basis of this conference is to provide an update on different aspects related to sleep medicine and the role of the dentist in the management of sleep disorders in an orofacial pain practice. The understanding of sleep and its management involves a wide range of medical and dental specialties, as demonstrated by the diversity of backgrounds of our speakers. A round table with Q & A will take place at the end of the morning and afternoon sessions.
