Synopsis:

Craniofacial pain is a complex and multifactorial condition that can be challenging to manage. This workshop is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to assess and manage patients with complex craniofacial pain presentations.

Session One: Assessment and Management of the Complex Patient with maxillofacial dysfunction and pain and Collaboration with Other Disciplines
Learning objectives
• Understand the multidisciplinary approach to the assessment and management of the complex craniofacial pain patient.
• Identify the key components of a comprehensive craniofacial pain assessment, including history, examination, and imaging.
• Expand knowledge of the clinical (differential) examination and management of the patients with craniofacial pain who has a complex problem.
• Understand the importance of collaboration with other disciplines in the management of the craniofacial pain patient.

Part Two: Clinical Classification of Craniofacial Neuropathies and its Clinical Implementation

Discussion of a complicated case of craniofacial neuropathy illustrates how musculoskeletal therapy can make a positive contribution to the quality of life of this persistent pain group.

• Understand the clinical classification of craniofacial neuropathy.
• Identify the main characteristics of the different types of craniofacial neuropathies.
• Discuss management options for patients with complex facial neuropathies

Orofacial Pain Introductory Program-Two Day Program

Pre-Conference III: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Injections in Orofacial Pain and Headache

This will be the second year that this course is presented. Based on participant feedback from last year, the afternoon will be solely dedicated to demonstrations of the specific injection techniques and hands on participation utilizing skulls and mannequins. Handheld ultrasound technology to assist needle placement and injection site accuracy will also be demonstrated.

Course Outline:
Beyond the diagnostic dilemmas we face when introduced to a patient with persistent orofacial pain, we then have the difficult task of choosing therapeutic directions of care that are most likely to ease suffering and promote tissue healing. From this perspective, injection protocol are amongst the tools that have proven to be beneficial in assisting diagnosis and addressing tissue injury/sensitization in somatic and neural structures.
As the pain disorders that are encountered by orofacial pain practitioners can be broadly divided into somatic, neuropathic and neuroplastic pain disorders, our challenges often lie in addressing persistent pain in muscles, tendons, the temporomandibular joints and painful conditions directly involving the trigeminal and occipital nerves. In addition, the neurovascular pain disorders inclusive of migraines, must also be kept in mind when a working diagnosis is being established and treatment is being planned.
This full day program therefore will be designed to discuss and demonstrate the use of both diagnostic and therapeutic injections. The anatomy and neuroanatomy of the orofacial region will be reviewed along with the indications that prompt the use of these injections, specific injection technique protocol and armamentarium, injection frequency recommendations and after care. The use of ultrasound as a tool to assist injection accuracy will also be introduced for common injection protocol and for the regenerative

What Have we Learned on the Potential Benefits and Problems Associated with Cannabis Use in the Context of Chronic Pain Management?

During the last decade, patients with chronic pain have increasingly turned to cannabis as a strategy to reduce pain. Many patients with chronic pain also report using cannabis to alleviate other problems that frequently accompany chronic pain, such as sleep disturbances and psychological distress. At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to identify some of the most common types of cannabis products used by patients with chronic pain. Participants should also be able to describe the potential benefits associated with cannabis use that have been observed among patients with chronic pain. Through this presentation, participants will also learn about the potential problems that may accompany the use of cannabis among patients with chronic pain. Participants will be familiarized with the potential psychological and neurocognitive problems that may be associated with cannabis use, and with the diagnostic criteria for cannabis use disorder. Finally, participants should be able to discuss current gaps in knowledge regarding the potential benefits and problems associated with cannabis in the context of chronic pain management.

The purpose of ICOP is to standardize the classification and diagnosis of orofacial pain, enabling healthcare professionals to make accurate diagnoses and develop effective treatment plans. It is particularly useful in cases where the diagnosis is uncertain, or where the clinician is unaware of the specific clinical presentation.
ICOP is based on a series of interrelated axes, including the location of the pain, the type of pain, its duration and pattern, and any associated symptoms or conditions. Each attendee should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the education. Workshops, breakfast & lunch sessions all require additional registration.
