Pre-Conference I:  Sleep Medicine: Introduction, Update & Future Direction

9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Program Fee:  $290.00

Dennis Bailey, DDS, FAAOP, D-ABDSM

Edward Sall, DDS, MD, MBA

The dentist's involvement in Sleep Medicine has been growing at an accelerated rate over the past years and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future.  Understanding sleep as well as sleep disorders is essential to the practice of orofacial pain.  This course is designed to provide an overview of sleep medicine from both the scientific as well as the clinical perspective.  The ability to understand the sleep study and the performance of a clinical evaluation will be reviewed.  In addition, the relationship of sleep and sleep disorders to co-morbid medical condition, orofacial pain, headaches and TMD will be reviewed.  When fabricating an appliance (splint) for orofacial pain, how does the dentist know they are fabricating the correct appliance?  In the presence of sleep breathing disorders, a mandibular repositioning appliance may be indicated as well.  Accordingly, a review of oral appliances that may be used and their indications will be reviewed along with guidelines for the bite relationship.

Pre-Conference II:  Anatomy of the Masticatory System and Related Cervical Structures: Clinical Application and Dissection

9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Program Fee:  $550.00

Ronald C. Auvenshine, DDS, PhD

Henry A. Gremillion, DDS, MAGD

This program will provide the participant with the opportunity to complete a detailed dissection of the superficial structures of the face, the masticatory musculature, and the temporomandibular joint.  Relationships to routine dental assessment and clinical procedures will be highlighted.  Participants in the dissection workshop will work in 2-3-member teams, each group dissecting ½ - 1/3  of a provided cadaver specimen.  Basic dissection instruments will be provided. It is strongly suggested that each workshop participant bring a head and neck anatomy atlas/text, and surgical instruments if desired.

Pre-Conference III:  Comprehensive Physical Therapy for the Cervical-Temporomandibular Complex: A Guide to Evaluation and Treatment for the Physical Therapist and Dentist

9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Program Fee:  $290.00

Jules Hesse, PT, PhD, MT, CCTT

Mark Strickland, PT, OCS, MTC, CertMDT, CFS, CCTT, CODN

Michael Karegeannes, PT, MHSc, LAT, MTC, CFS, CCTT, CMTPT, CODN

Corine M. Visscher, PT, PhD, CCTT

This program is a special opportunity to see interdisciplinary collaboration at work. The international speakers will discuss in depth how to evaluate and manage the temporomandibular joint and cervical region from a physical therapist's perspective. The participants will learn the standard of care for temporomandibular and cervical evaluation and management, and the relationship to orofacial pain. In addition the participants will learn how to collaborate with other orofacial pain colleagues to achieve optimal patient outcomes. This program will give the audience an opportunity to discuss the evidence of the presented material with the speakers. The program concludes with primary research supporting the efficacy of interdisciplinary management.
